Understanding the Power of Anna Daan

Annadanam Param Danam — The Gift of Food is the Greatest Gift

In the Vedic tradition, the act of feeding others — known as Anna Daan — is celebrated as one of the highest forms of charity.

Why Food Donation is Supreme

The Taittiriya Upanishad states: "Annam Brahma" — Food is Brahman (the Supreme). Food sustains life, nourishes the body, feeds the mind, and when sanctified as prasadam, nourishes the soul.

At ISKCON Panihati, we practice a unique form of Anna Daan: the food is first offered to Lord Krishna with love and devotion, transforming it into sacred prasadam (the Lord's mercy). This prasadam carries spiritual potency that purifies anyone who partakes of it.

Daily Prasadam at ISKCON Panihati

Every day, our kitchen devotees wake before dawn to prepare fresh, sattvic meals using:

  • Pure cow's ghee
  • Fresh seasonal vegetables
  • Traditional recipes passed down in the Vaishnava tradition
  • Rice, dal, rotis, sabji, and sweets

The Spiritual Merit of Anna Daan

According to the Padma Purana, one who feeds a hungry person earns merit equivalent to:

  • Performing 100 fire sacrifices
  • Donating gold equal to one's weight
  • Taking bath in all holy rivers

How You Can Participate

You can sponsor Anna Daan at ISKCON Panihati for just Rs 1,100. This amount feeds approximately 100 people with a complete meal of prasadam.
